As all teams cope with a disrupted football season, it was great to get the Hawks back playing and this week they were at home to Milnrow Juniors Lionesses. Eve Hadley went in goal. Erin Smith, Izzy Dunne, and Daisy Halewood went in defence with Abby Bingham, Tia Thompson, and Isabelle Dawson in midfield. Fern Ashworth and Poppy Millard went upfront. Phoebe Williams and Emily Blackburn started as subs.
It was a strong game from both sides who had dropped to 9 v 9 due to player availability. There had been some focus areas in training which the Hawks were clearly putting into practice, but with some areas that Coach Tim will certainly look back over. The Hawks were effective in all areas against a team who were strong in defence and covered the midfield well.
The Hawks broke early and Blackburn scored on 8 minutes. The goal settled the team well and brought them some of that confidence which they struggled with in previous matches. Millard provided a further two goals on the 20th and 25th minutes; both from excellent crosses in from Bingham who must have covered some distance throughout the game and hit the cross bar on a couple of occasions herself. Smith worked hard in defence with good calls to her team in goal from Hadley. Dunne provided good pace from the back with Halewood offering excellent cover. Thompson and Dawson added to the midfield with strong tackles and allowed the attack to push on.
Ashworth covered the wing well allowing the team to attack with Williams adding to the midfield pace to put constant pressure on the opposition. Blackburn had chances to add to the scoreline but was denied by the goalkeeper on more than one occasion. Milnrow broke in the second half and found the back of the net on 58 minutes. The game finished 3-1 to the Hawks and the girls celebrated a much deserved win.
