Haslingden U9’s girls played their first ever competitive game today against Cadley. Poppy Millard took up the position in goals with Gabriella Rosthorn and Holly Taylor in defence and Meisha Gamble and Alannah Pollard in midfield with Fern Ashworth in attack. Lyla Cullen and Miss Lou Harvey waiting in the wings for their turn to get on to the field. The opposition manager only had seven players so both sides agreed to play 6v6. Haslingden made most of the play in the first ten minutes with Cadley chasing round the pitch in a groups. Ashworth managed to brake free into space and had a run on goals, only to shoot wide of its mark. Some good tackling saw Pollard shoot on goal only for it to be saved by the keeper, but Pollard followed it up to poke it into the goals. Some good kicking by Rosthorn alloward Haslingden to force the pace and a similar goal was scored by Pollard. Not to be out done Ashworth also got on the score sheet with a good solo effort from mid field. Haslingden finished the first half 4-1 up and playing some good football. Cadley came out fighting in the second half and started to pass it around more, and a good shot on goal gave Gamble no chance of saving. 4-2 and Cadley had the bit between their teeth and soon went on to score again. Haslingden had to dig deep and Harvey, Cullen and Millard played their part in keeping Cadley quite, but there was no stopping Cadley 4-4 and it looked like Cadley was pushing for the win. Pollard was determined on the field chasing back to get in some vital tackles. Ashworth won the ball and passed forward for Pollard to run past 2 players and scored, what turned out to be the winning goal and her fourth of the game .All the girls did really well today but some improvements need to be made when facing Burnley next week.
